10 Major Oil Spills in History

Here is a list of 10 major oil spills in history that caused severe oil pollution and irreparable damage to the ecosystem.

1. Amoco Cadiz – The Amoco Cadiz ran aground on Portsall Rocks, three miles off the coast of Brittany, France on March 16, 1978 due to stormy weather. Approximately 200 miles of the coastline was polluted as the entire cargo of 68.7 million gallons of oil was spilled into the sea.

2. Arabian Gulf Spills – About 900 million barrels of oil spilled into the Arabian Gulf as the Iraqi army destroyed tankers, oil terminals, and oil wells in Kuwait during the Gulf war in January 1991, resulting in one of the largest oil spill disasters ever.

3. Exxon Valdez – In what is regarded as the largest oil spill disaster in American history, the Exxon Valdez ran aground in Prince William Sound, Alaska on March 24, 1989, spilling 10.8 million gallons of oil. The cleanup alone cost .5 billion.

4. Ixtoc I – The exploratory well blew out on June 3, 1979 in the Gulf of Mexico and by the time the well was brought under control, 140 million gallons of oil had spilled. This is rated as No. 2 on the list of worst oil spill incidents on record.

5. Burmah Agate – The Burmah Agate collided with the Mimosa in Galveston harbor on November 1, 1979 to cause one of the most infamous marine oil spills.

6. Atlantic Empress – The Greek oil tanker Atlantic Empress was involved in two major oil spills when it collided with the Aegean Captain off Trinidad and Tobago during a tropical rainstorm on July 19, 1979. The spills together are the largest ship-based spill and the fourth largest total oil spill in history.

7. Argo Oil Merchant – On December 15, 1976 the Argo Merchant ran aground on Nantucket Island, Massachusetts spilling 7.7 million US gallons of fuel oil, enough to heat 18,000 homes for a year.

8. Prestige Oil Spill – The largest environmental disaster ever in Spain, the sinking of the oil tanker Prestige off the Galician coast on November 13, 2002 caused considerable damage to the local fishing industry.

9. Barge Bouchard 155 – Three ships, the barge Bouchard 155, the freighter Balsa 37, and the barge Ocean 255, collided in Tampa Bay, Florida, on August 10, 1993. The Bouchard 155 alone spilled an estimated 336,000 gallons of No.6 fuel oil.

10. Southeast Queensland – The cleanup efforts were estimated at a staggering A0,000 dollars a day in one of the recent oil spill disasters, which occurred on March 11, 2009 off the coast of southeast Queensland.

British Petroleum (BP) says it’s maneuvered a cap into position in its latest attempt to plug the undersea well that’s spewing oil in the Gulf of Mexico. Company executives say it will take up to 24 hours before they know whether it’s worked. The environmental disaster began more than six weeks ago, when a BP-operated offshore rig sunk following an explosion.

Ending the Embargo Against Cuban Would be Good for the US Economy

For the first time in nearly fifty years the United States has an opportunity to normalize relations with Cuba.

The inauguration of President Barack Obama offers the chance for a clean break with the policies that have separated the US from our closest Caribbean neighbor.

The Cuban people have suffered under the rule of Fidel Castro and living in a time warp where little has changed since the Communist leader lead the revolution and ousted Batista in 1959. Cars from the 50′s held together by rope and human ingenuity, buildings deteriorate an decaying and revolutionary slogans painted on the walls make Cuba a land that time has forgotten.

The embargo itself was initiated by Robert F. Kennedy in 1962 after Fidel Castro took control of the country and he nationalized the economy. The embargo has been in place since and has failed in its efforts to initiate an overthrow of Fidel Castro. The embargo has been supported by the Cuban-American community of South Florida for many years, however recent polling suggests this is changing.

By ending the Cuban embargo, President Obama has the opportunity to help both the Cuban and American people. By allowing travel to the island nation, Cubans can get a taste of the freedoms we as Americans take for granted. Cubans will be exposed to our fashion, music and technology which will stimulate a desire for freedom and personal wealth.

Travel to Cuba will also generate much needed dollars for the Caribbean Nation which was devastated by four hurricanes last year.

The European Union has already ended their embargo and recently the United Nations, in a 183-3 vote, called for an end to the embargo worldwide.

Many US business groups have been advocating the end of the embargo as well. Many business groups including the American Farm Bureau Federation, Business Roundtable, US Chamber of Commerce, National Retail Federation and Grocery Manufacturers Association have called for an end to the embargo. Currently only certain agricultural and medical products are exempt from the embargo.

The US economy will be greatly affected by ending the Cuban embargo in a very positive way. At a time when the US economy needs it most, we would enter a nearby market that has nearly 11.5 million people and nearly 43,000 square miles.

Our recession battered construction industries would also benefit greatly as engineers, carpenters and skilled laborers could help the Cuban people rebuild their country. Building supply industries would start manufacturing again and natural resources would be consumed.

Travel industry segments such as cruise lines and airlines would prosper as tourists explored this beautiful country. Port would be rebuilt, airports would be improved and hotels constructed, all with the help of US industries.

Cuba also appears to have a large expanse of untapped oil resources. China and Venezuela would like to tie those resources up for themselves which would not only cut the US market from the oil, but could create the opportunity for an Eco disaster for the Caribbean and Southeastern United States.

Politically, ending the Cuban embargo just makes sense, Russia is looking to Cuba to establish a Caribbean presence. Since the demise of the old Soviet Empire, Russian influence in Cuba has waned. But in December of 08, Russia sent three warships to visit the island nation. In January Raoul Castro visited Russia to seek trade and money. Be assured that Russia would like to expand their presence in the region and this is a great opportunity to do so.

President Obama has another chance to make history by ending the embargo and promoting freedom, however this window of opportunity won’t be open forever.

Are You A Fair-Weather Friend?

The weather is changing. Some people blame global warming. My grandmother blamed the astronauts who walked on the moon.
There isn’t much weather in Los Angeles – unless you count earthquakes, mudslides, fires and droughts. Because LA is desert, the primary use of windshield wipers is to hold parking tickets.
When it does rain, however, it’s a major news story. Television programs are interrupted for rain alerts. Because of the lack of rain, oil builds up on our freeways. Oil is our black ice and creates just as much traffic trauma as the frozen version.
Then there’s smog – euphemistically referred to as low cloud cover. It gives us laid-back, Pacific Coasters something to beach about.
Although the atmospheric conditions in LA are as predictable as night and day, our forecasters still make mistakes. Instead of having radar and satellites, maybe they just need windows in their offices.
Perhaps forecasters are technology-challenged because many aren’t meteorologists. Nice hair and good smiles seem to be the main criteria for the job, but some talent is necessary. It’s not easy to show high pressure patterns by pointing at a blank, blue screen while being guided by quick peeks at off-screen televisions.
If you can simultaneously pat your head and rub your stomach, you could have a future in forecasting – but I don’t think pessimists should apply for the job. They’re the ones who say the day’s going to be partly cloudy, when they could just as correctly say partly sunny.
Forecasters in general spend more time discussing what happened today than predicting what’s going to happen tomorrow. Of course, this greatly increases their chances of being right. They also spend considerable time discussing what’s going on in other parts of the country; but I enjoy that – especially in the winter.
Winter is what attracts visits from our family and friends – many more than when we lived in New Jersey. Nevertheless, they say they’d miss the seasons if they lived here. Don’t they miss the seasons when they winter in Florida?
Because we live by the ocean, they want to know if we worry about tsunamis. No, I worry about the neighbor’s hot tub overflowing.
Many of our family and friends live in New England, where they say, “If you don’t like the weather, wait a minute”. If you don’t like the weather in Los Angeles, there’s no point waiting for it to change.

Oil Spills and Technology

BP Oil spills are clearly a destructive man made tragedy that has affected our country and world for decades now. In light of the recent BP gulf spill, there is tons of information being written, spoken, and blogged about by the day making the crisis at hand much more real to the general public than ever before.

While typically much smaller in nature, oil spills happen each and every year around the world. Depending on the location of the incident and the surrounding environment, the cleanup, ecological damage, and associated costs can vary. However, even with these types of incidents being part of the industry, it has become rare to have one of this size and nature. Most adults recall the last incident of this nature, the Exxon Valdez oil spill, which occurred in 1989. That disaster left approximately 250,000 barrels of crude oil in the bay, whereas, the gulf oil spill, also known as Deepwater Horizon, has continually been gushing approximately 100,000 barrels of crude oil into the gulf per day since late April.

Deepwater Horizon is a much bigger disaster than the Exxon Valdez spill. However, with the timing being almost 21 years later to the date, technology makes this catastrophe a different type of problem to deal with.

The incredible gap in technology changes how the information and how the response is managed. In 1989, there were no bloggers; in fact, the Internet was nowhere near even the dial-up stage. Information was obtained and dispersed through the news stations and papers. There were no live cams that could show you the exact progress of the spill at any given moment, and consequently, the facts were slow to come. With all of the technology and information now available to the general public, managing this humongous mess becomes much more complicated.

Exxon wound up paying around 2 billion dollars to clean up the spill, not including punitive damages and civil awards. This was in a world where something of this nature had never happened before, and understanding the appropriate steps to take in preserving the ecological habitat was shaky, at best. This also happened in a place that was not largely inhabited and where the entire world could not know the intricate details at the push of a button.

With information being available at all times, managing this disaster becomes a real challenge. BP does not have the luxury that Exxon had to take time, assess, and mitigate the issues and problems at hand. Instead, they are managing a hotline where anyone that has any idea of how to fix the problem can call in and make their recommendation. They have to answer to the president, congress, and people of the United States in real time, not after the fact.

Whether the influx of information readily available to the public is a pro or a con will be up for debate for many years to come. However, faced with having to manage the general public’s opinion and outrage, while at the same time trying to actually stop the gush of oil spilling into the gulf, a difficult situation is made even more so. While technology has, in many ways, become a great aid, progress may actually be held back because of the vast amount of information so readily available.

Naturalists fear the worst is yet to come for Gulf of Mexico wildlife

An unmitigated environmental disaster, an economic crisis and a personal tragedy, the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico continues to elicit more questions than environmentalists can be answer.   President Obama’s rhetoric on the matter is becoming increasingly bellicose as he responds to public demand for those responsible to be brought to task.  As Obama talks of ‘kicking ass’ one assumes it will be BP CEO Tony Hayward who will be bracing himself and assuming the position, along with thousands of pensions in the UK.   Meanwhile the Gulf’s myriad wildlife bears the ultimate brunt of the oil spill which some estimate to be at a rate more than 24,000 barrels a day. 

The pictures of fish, turtles and sea birds being washed up on the coast, rendered lifeless by thick, cloying oil are becoming depressingly familiar however many local naturalists are saying it is the damage we cannot see that should be of greatest concern.  The territory of dolphins covers hundreds of miles in the Gulf and consequently they are more susceptible to the effects of the oil spill which in the case of marine mammals causes death by internal bleeding.  These casualties will only come to light in the next few years along with  the long term effects on bird and turtle reproduction.  The long term impact on manatees is also of particular concern as following a winter that saw over 500 manatees die due to extreme weather, there is a real threat that the oil spill will seriously damage grass sea beds and other vegetation that forms the basis of their diet.

While the President is currently pre-occupied with establishing blame and delivering reprisal we can only hope that as the sheer scale of this unprecedented eco-disaster is realised,  he will be moved to  channel his efforts into finding alternative clean energy sources

Oil keeps gushing from a deep-water well, adding to the catastrophic slick flowing into the Gulf of Mexico. Meanwhile, a Senate hearing into the disaster has seen oil company executives blaming each other. US president Barack Obama has voiced his frustration at the response to what is feared could be the country’s worst-ever environmental accident.
